- Abstract
This study presents the application of the methodology proposed by Pinto and Alfonsi (1974) to estimate the air temperature in the drainage basin of Piquiri River, Paraná State, Brazil. This methodology is an alternative for the development of climatic studies in drainage basis that do not have sufficient meteorological data. The methodology was applied to the drainage basin of Piquiri River; to test the reliability of the technique, a correlation analysis was performed between the estimation method and the observed temperature in four meteorological stations of IAPAR, revealing a correlation greater than 0.98. The estimated values were calculated for 73 locations with their respective latitudes and altitudes pre-defined by Instituto Aguas do Paraná, and isotherm maps were developed with the annual and monthly means via interpolation. The distribution pattern of the highest and lowest air temperatures agree with the values presented by Koppen (1948) 's climatic classification system -- the north of the basin exhibited the highest temperatures, while the center-south area had the lowest values. The methodological approach showed to be effective and can thus be used for other studies such as the climatic water balance to determine evapotranspiration and periods of surplus and deficit in drainage basins.
