- Abstract
Epidemics are one of the most frequent natural disasters in the Ottoman lands. In the Ottoman geography, especially the port cities, mainly Istanbul and Izmir, were the main centers of the disease. Plague was the most widespread of the epidemics until the 17th century, which gave rise to great loss. In addition to the studies on 16th and 17th century plague, one of the important sources related to the subject is the documents in the Genoa State Archives. Especially the letters and reports of Genoese envoys and consuls who served in the Ottoman lands during the centuries mentioned are particularly invaluable and contain significant information. One of the subjects of the correspondence of these officials, who were also good observers, is about what happened to them in the Ottoman lands. This study aims to present the findings of Genoese envoys and consuls regarding plague outbreaks in Ottoman lands and the information they provided about it. The study makes an assessment on some issues and examples that clarify the whole picture.
