- Abstract
This paper examines the popular music written and performed in support of Catalan nationalism beginning in 1959 as a result of Lluís Serrahima's exhortation to young Catalan musicians of the need to write songs in Catalan despite the difficult political situation of Catalan culture under the Franco dictatorship. From folk singer-songwriters Lluís Llach and Raimon in the 1960s and early 1970s to the explosion of popular music in support of the Catalan separatist procés in the lead up to and aftermath of the contested referendum of October 1, 2017, this paper focuses on the strategies used in the songs to foment a shared sense of community. These include using the first person plural to emphasize a history of repression and resistance, a small geographic space, song and poetry as arms of protest, and a shared common dream.
