- Abstract
Vasvár peace treaty signed 10 August 1664 between Vienna and the Sublime Portewas settled in line of the status quo. The treaty was humiliating for the Hungarians especially after the victorious battle of Szentgotthárd. According to some people, the Sublime Porte could not have had better agreement if its army had won at Szentgotthárd. Hungarians was especially concerned by the resolution of the treaty in which according to the Ottomans' demand ZrínyiÚjvár demolished during the war, could not rebuild the castle in the future. Why were the fortifications so important for the Sublime Porte, why was the Empire so concerned by this castle at the frontier? In this paper we make an attempt to answer these questions by preseting the real role of the fortification that played an important role during the Habsburg-Ottoman war of 1663-1664 and the field research's newest results. Furthermore the paper presents the process and the achievments of the archeologic researches taking place at the fortress hill since 2006.
