The joys of Romance.
- Authors
Sampson, Rodney
- Abstract
The article examines lexical items in Romance languages that have been used to express the concepts of joy or happiness. The Declaration of Independence in the U.S. has shown that joy and happiness are fundamental emotions. It shows that the language of affect is remarkably pliant in the Romance languages. It explores the lexical and semantic evolution of the language of joy and describes the supremacy of forms of the French joie since the Middle Ages. The influence of metaphor on lexical growth and renewal is also discussed.
