This article evaluates the concept of physical rest for the Hebrew root šbt (שבת) and the expression "day of rest" for the term šabbāt. This review is accomplished through a comparative study with regard to the semantic sequence work-rest-fatigue. Concerning the area of biblical interpretation, the proposal is to revise the idea of physical rest as one pertaining exclusively to the Hebrew root šbt (שבת).
