- Abstract
John L. Holland was a researcher, educator, author, and social scientist whose work in the area of career choices is fundamental to any career counselor's training. His voluminous writings include Manual for the Vocational Preference Inventory (Holland, 1967), Self-Directed Search for Career Planning (Holland, 1970), the Vocational Exploration and Insight Kit (Holland et al., 1980), Dictionary of Holland Occupational Codes (Gottfredson, Holland, & Ogawa, 1982), My Vocational Situation--An Experimental Diagnostic Form (Holland, 1980), and Making Vocational Choices (Holland, 1997). The purpose of this paper is to summarize Holland's initial work and selected extensions to his theories, specifically in terms of personality types and career counseling.
