- Abstract
Chinese room argument, which could be seen as the reference point of the basic ideas in John Searle's philosophy of mind and that could be evaluated as one of the major factors of Searle's position in the area of philosophy mind, is the research topic of this study. Chinese room experiment was put forward by Searle against strong artificial intelligence theory that is based on Alan Turing's ideas on digital computers. The main target of Searle by this thought experiment is to justify his claim that it is wrong to talk about computers' mind because they just have syntactical operations and never have semantic content. In this study, the systematical structure of this justification will be evaluated in detail and the counter-arguments of Chinese room argument will be critically analyzed. Searle is against strong artificial intelligence theory due to the fact that both this theory is the extension of identity theory accepting mind and brain as one and the same thing, and it handles the operation of mind just by syntactically. The aim of this study is both to evaluate the impact of Chinese room argument in holistic philosophy of Searle and to indicate its contribution to the literature of philosophy of mind. Chinese room experiment is the reflection of Searle's general attitude in philosophy mind who refuses both monist and dualist theories concerning mind-body problem. Critics on this thought experiment, the replies of Searle on these critics and the outcomes reached via these discussions composes the basic content of this study.
