- Title
Crystal engineering: Towards artificial enzymes.
- Authors
Hupp, Joseph T.
- Abstract
The article discusses the reliance of metalloprotein enzymes on iron porphyrin haem centres in binding small molecules such as water and oxygen. It mentions that the metalloproteins haemoglobin found in red blood cells and the myoglobin in muscle tissue use nanoporous crystalline haem-like arrays to reversibly bind oxygen. Moreover, it emphasizes the role of molecular tie bars in activating ligands in catalysis applications.
