The article discusses the effects of retinoic acid on alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) and tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase gene expression in human periodontal ligament cells and gingival fibroblasts. Topics discussed include patients with hypophosphatasia; the human periodontal ligament cells; and the ALP activity in osteoblastic and fibroblastic cells.
