AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENTARY FIRST SPEECHES.
- Authors
MCCOOEY, DAVID; LOWE, DAVID
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the role and influence of autobiographical material in the Parliamentary first speeches of Australia in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Introductory comments are given noting the rise of personality-centered content rather than issue-specific campaigning in politics. The particular manifestations of this trend in the "autobiographical self-disclosure" of parliamentary acceptance speeches is analyzed in depth, asserting that politicians use the rhetorical tactic in order to establish their credentials and political affiliations.
