- Title
The Mill: A Worker's Memoir from 1945 to 1948.
- Authors
Edwards, Alfred; Heron, Craig
- Abstract
Presents the 1945-48 memoir of Alfred Edwards, a knitter in the National Knitting Mills, a textile mill in Hamilton, Ontario. Because of previous union activities, Edwards was recruited as an executive in the shop union, an independent union that became Local 860 of the Textile Workers' Union of America, an affiliate of the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL). Edwards's memoir describes his attendance at the 1947 CCL convention in Toronto, the power struggles between social democratic unions and Communist-led ones, conflicts between union bureaucrats and local activists, and union leaders' insensitivity to local matters in order to promote industry-wide gains.
