- Abstract
In the early part the Spanish colonization, the Visayans of Samar and Leyte had five different kinds of alcoholic beverages: tuba (coconut wine,), alak (distilled liquor), kabarawan (mead), pangasi (rice beer) and intus (sugar cane wine). However, at present only tuba has remained the native alcoholic beverage in these islands. This paper will analyze the connections between Spanish colonization and the disappearance of alak, kabarawan, pangasi and intus as well as the continued existence of tuba in these islands.
