- Abstract
Government initiatives, policies and curricula advocate for the use of technology in education. The political reasoning for such an emphasis appears to concern positioning Australia within a global context and aligning with an approach that fosters valued knowledge as determined by societal expectations and requirements. The draft Australian curriculum concurs that such knowledge has evolved over the past twenty years and inturn has implications for education: "Globalisation and technological change are placing greater demands on education and skill development in Australia and the nature of jobs available to young Australians is changing faster than ever" (National Curriculum Board, 2009, p. 5). However, questions continue to be raised about the true value of technology facilitating teaching and learning. What is the impact of the use of technology on student learning outcomes and education in general? Does pedagogical practice need to change as a response to using innovative technology? What are the benefits and or disadvantages of technology in music education? A recent research study explores reasons why technology should be used in the music classroom.
