- Abstract
Music has played an integral part of the Catholic Church for centuries. However over the past decade, music has continued to decline in the Church and has changed from its original traditional form. Catholic schools education is based on the teachings from the Catholic Church. It is suggested that these schools significantly omit the teaching and practice of church music; an integral traditional aspect of the church. To validate this assumption, a survey was conducted on a random selection of Catholic schools in South Australia. The survey results confirmed that Catholic schools in South Australia value church music as an important aspect of the Catholic tradition. Further, the survey indicated that the schools are not incorporating church music into the curriculum primarily due to lack of time, knowledge and resources in the field. The following paper analyzes the importance of liturgical music in Catholic schools, the practical application, the obstacles posed, the evidence provided from the survey and recommendations and implementation strategies of how liturgical music can be incorporated into the curriculum in Catholic schools.
