- Abstract
The 2023 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Guidelines for the Management of Endocarditis were developed by a multi-disciplinary task force and endorsed by various medical associations. The guidelines cover all aspects of endocarditis management, including prevention, diagnosis, antibiotic treatment, surgical indications, and long-term management. There are also specific chapters on prosthetic valve endocarditis, cardiac implantable electronic device-associated endocarditis, right-sided endocarditis, and endocarditis in the elderly. The guidelines include 42 new and 23 revised recommendations, with a focus on antibiotic prophylaxis, advanced cardiac imaging, outpatient antibiotic therapy, surgical timing, and specific clinical scenarios. The guidelines emphasize the importance of the Endocarditis Team and patient-centered care. Despite progress, endocarditis remains a challenging medical problem, and the guidelines aim to provide essential guidance for clinicians. The guidelines also include a list of "Ten Commandments" for endocarditis management, covering prevention, the role of the Endocarditis Team, diagnosis, outpatient antibiotic therapy, surgical indications and timing, complications, and specific types of endocarditis.
