- Title
Men Dancing Athletically.
- Authors
Keefe, Maura
- Abstract
The article discusses male dancers, and public perceptions and stereotypes regarding them. Four specific dances--Nijinsky's "Jeux," Ted Shawn's "Olympiad," Gene Kelley's "Dancing: A Man's Game," and Twyla Tharp's "Dancing is a Man's Sport, Too"--are examined to illustrate the author's argument that choreographers employ numerous strategies to masculinize dance, and to present it as an athletic activity. Male athletes have helped to alleviate some of the anxieties which choreographers have regarding the perceived femininity of male dancers.
