- Title
Black Candidates in Search of Electoral Support: Is Success Dependent on Residential and Social Interaction?
- Authors
Sullivan, Jas M.; Esmail, Ashraf M.
- Abstract
The article seeks to examine whether political behavior such as attitude toward a black candidate is shaped by the voters' residence at the macro-level and their social interactions at the micro-level in the U.S. It provides various explanations of political behavior based on candidate characteristics and environmental factors. Results of the study revealed that the mere presence of blacks in the city of residence does not provide an assurance that white voters will be impartial in their choice of a black candidate. The author states that the implication of the study is that black candidates have a huge hindrance in their way as they seek victory in majority-white districts or in state-wide contests.
