Consent to treatment for children and adults with learning difficulties.
- Abstract
The article discusses the subject of consent process facing dentists in Ireland. The four components to valid consent to dental treatment are capacity, information, voluntariness and authority. Under current Irish law, 16- to 17-year olds have the capacity to dental treatment. An outline of who can act as parent or provide consent on behalf of a minor is also provided. Particular focus is given to the current Irish law Commissions Consultation "Children and the Law; Medical Treatment," along with the dental treatment of adults with learning difficulties.
