The article focuses on maternal infection during pregnancy which has been considered a risk factor for schizophrenia. The author presents some studies which indicate that maternal infection with a wide variety of agents might potentially increase risk for schizophrenia. She mentions that work in the area of animal modelling is now attempting to approach the question of the mechanism by which a maternal infection might affect fetal brain development.
