- Abstract
The article presents the commentaries concerning the painting "First Launch" by artist Fred Richter, depicting Eugene Ely's launch at a Navy ship on November 14, 2010 with his rudimentary flotation device. Retired Rear Admiral Jim Flatley is particular on the unique flotation device by Ely which has no shoulder harness or seat belt. Barren Tillman has given ideas on the first use of shoulder harness during the World War I. Bob Besal was also surprised on the absence of shoulder harness.
