- Abstract
To assess and monitor the motor development of infants in a residential care facility for children. Methods: This longitudinal study was conducted in Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, between January 2016 and November 2023 in a residential care facility for children. Data on birth, health conditions, and institutionalization of infants were collected from the records of the institution. The motor development was assessed using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale at admission and every two months. Results: A total of 28 infants (57.14% female) with age of 13.70 ± 7.39 months at institutionalization were included. The most frequent causes of institutionalization included neglect, abandonment, and caregiver use of alcohol or drugs (or both). Most infants who presented delayed motor development at the initial assessment improved satisfactorily during the period of institutionalization. Conclusion: The motor development of infants in a residential care facility for children improved. They acquired age-appropriate motor skills when placed in an environment with adequate resources and stimuli, including early physiotherapeutic intervention. These findings highlight the importance of an enriched environment in facilitating infant development in institutional settings.
