- Abstract
This article presents a case study of Kenya's most popular newspaper which shows how press representations of Kenyan women construct and reinforce an inequitable gender classification system. As elsewhere, news in Kenya is a male genre in which women's presence signifies different from a presumed male norm. By demonstrating the hegemonic work accomplished at the site of gender representation, the case study extends to Kenya arguments that improved news coverage of women requires fundamental changes in the structure of news and newswork within a particular cultural context. This paper demonstrates how journalistic conventions mesh with gender discourses to deprive female newsmakers of the authority to act as true subjects to the news.
