- Abstract
The article describes the development of the creole language Papiamentu during the period of slavery in the Caribbean islands of Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire. According to the author, the lexicon of Papiamentu is primarily of Iberian origin. He adds that Spanish influences are even more prevalent in Aruban Papiamentu than in Papiamentu spoken on Curaçao and Bonaire. A background of the origin of African enslavement by Europeans in presented.
