- Authors
Tiatco, Anril P.
- Abstract
The author describes the Lenten rites in Apalit and Cutud in Pampanga, a province in the Philippines. The libad is a water festival and ritual in Apalit, while the nailing on the cross is the highlight of a passion play or sinakulo by Ricardo Navarro that is enacted on the streets of Cutud. In the sinakulo, an actor reenact the passion, crucifixion and death of Jesus. The first person to be nailed to the cross is Artemio Añosa, a faith healer who believed it to be his supreme sacrifice. On the other hand, the libad is a veneration of Apalit's patron saint Apung Uru and a welcome for the coming rains.
