- Abstract
This article discusses the paradigms, the blank slate, the noble savage, and the ghost in the machine, by giving some examples of Brazilian dance experiences. Blank slate is a kind of loose translation of the term "tabula rasa," a Medieval Latin term which means scraped tablet. In terms of dance, for many centuries the dancing body was described as a blank slate that should be built carefully through physical training. The noble savage encapsulates the belief that humans have an untroubled and peaceful natural state and that blights like anxiety and violence are the by-products of civilization. Lastly, the ghost in the machine in the field of dance means that the dancing body was interpreted as an instrument of the mind or even the soul.
