- Authors
Provost, Sarah
- Abstract
A critique is presented of the poem "Homage to Mistress Bradstreet" by John Berryman, focusing on themes of sublimation, idealization, and redemption that are also used in his sonnets to his adulterous lover, Lise from the book "Berryman's Sonnets." The author compares "Homage" and the sonnets' depictions of women, and discusses Berryman's interest in murderer Katharine Nairn. Themes of treachery, infertility, and guilt in the poems are also discussed.
