- Authors
Taylor, E. Derek
- Abstract
The article presents analyzes the 1753 English novel "The History of Sir Charles Grandison," by Samuel Richardson, examining the identity of the character referred to as "the Patriarch." The author argues that Richardson was referring to the Pope of Rome, who also holds the title of "Patriarch of the West." Further discussion is then given explaining the use of the term in deference to anti-catholic sentiment among his readership, and the identity of Pope Benedict XIV when the book was written.
