James Harris’s ‘Much Ado’: Text and Historical Context of a Sarah Fielding Misattribution in the Gentleman’s Magazine.
- Authors
Lorraine de Montluzin, Emily
- Abstract
The article discusses a January 1752 letter to the editor signed 'X' appearing in the British periodical "Gentleman's Magazine" about the lack of news coverage in the periodical of the 1751 hurricanes in Jamaica. The letter was addressed to 'Sylvanus Urban,' pen name of the magazine's editor Edward Cave, and included a dialogue titled "Much Ado" attributed to Sarah Fielding. The dialogue was actually written by James Harris as a commentary upon the sinking of the H.M.S. Victory in 1744. The letter and dialogue are both reprinted.
