To prevent shunt system infection or peritonitis, placing the distal shunt tube at a distance from the unsterile area (stoma) could be considered. Placement of gastrostomy tubes in patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunts does not result in increased incidence of shunt infection or decreased survival.
