- Abstract
The article discusses the author's experience working at the Linguistics Research Lab (LRL) at Gallaudet University, where they conducted research on American Sign Language (ASL). The author describes their journey from being a graduate student in linguistics to working with renowned linguist William C. Stokoe at the LRL. They highlight the importance of their research in understanding the linguistic functions of non-manual behaviors in ASL and challenging assumptions and practices in sign language teaching and deaf education. The author also discusses their efforts to make linguistic research accessible to the Deaf community and their involvement in developing programs for teaching ASL and ASL/English interpretation. However, they also faced challenges and tensions, including the closure of the LRL and the need to confront the powers that be at Gallaudet. Despite these challenges, the author expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work with colleagues who were dedicated to positive change and empowerment in the Deaf community.
