- Abstract
The effectiveness and functionality of hormonal contraceptives have scientifically tested results, thus providing women with a choice by means of medical follow-up. However, like any medication, they have side effects and pose a risk of developing diseases. The objective was to analyze the consequences of the use of hormonal contraceptives. The bibliographical search was carried out in the Virtual Health Library (BVS-BIREME), through the SciELO, Lilacs, BDENF and MEDLINE databases. The following descriptors combined with the Boolean operator AND were used, namely: Contraceptives AND Risk Factors AND Women's Health. We included articles written in Portuguese or English, freely available in full, from January 2011 to December 2021. Studies published in annals, monographs, dissertations, theses and those not available in full for free were excluded. The sample consisted of 14 articles. Hormonal contraceptives present several side effects, namely: thrombotic events such as arrhythmia, headache, nausea, headache, increased blood pressure, irritability, weight gain, and dizziness, frankness, and fatigue, contributing to dropout during use. Thus, it is of utmost importance the clarification to women about these effects, as well as the monitoring by the multiprofessional health team of primary care, in order to promote a family planning without risks and secondary pathologies.
