- Abstract
Disaster waste is the waste that is generated by the direct effects of a disaster and due to poor waste management in the postdisaster period. Disasters cause new problems both by their negative impacts on existing waste management systems and by creating additional waste burdens. The waste burden of earthquakes is higher compared to other types of disasters. Disaster waste management is an essential part of the disaster response after an earthquake. Improper management of disaster waste could bring new environmental health risks. To reduce these risks, post-disaster waste management must be included in disaster preparedness planning, and risk assessments should be carried out from the early days of a disaster.
