- Abstract
Presents an interview with Arab American poet and memoirist Suheir Hammad, who was born a Palestinian in a refugee camp in Amman, Jordan and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Hamad performs her poems on the HBO television series "Def Poetry Jam." She talks about her respect for writer Ghassan Kanafani and Americans' general ignorance of Arab culture and the dehumanized, demonized, and marginalized presentation of Arabs in Israeli and American schools and media. Hammad discusses the difficulty and identity problems of being simultaneously a Semite, a Palestinian, and American.
