- Abstract
The objective of this research is to prove and/or relate vitamin D as a factor for the prevention and/or treatment of the disease, it would be a good low-cost alternative with no side effects. This is an integrative review type research, of a qualitative nature, in which online databases were used, applying Boolean operators, search extractors and Descriptors in Health Sciences/Medical Subject Headings (DeCS/MeSH). Vitamin D deficiency at various stages of life may be associated with adverse brain events, there are enzymes and receptors present in the brain that indicate the role of vitamin D in the regulation of neurotrophic factors. The neuroprotective effect is related to the decrease in cell death mediated by glutamate in cultures of neuronal cells from the cortex, hippocampus and midbrain, and it is possible to emphasize that vitamin D supplementation attenuates the depletion in dopamine and serotonin levels. Therefore, vitamin D deficiency is not the cause of depression, however, its supplementation and maintenance of adequate serum levels can both prevent and also be an alternative form of treatment to minimize the symptoms of the disease.
