- Title
The Multiplicity of Response Options in Social Support Situations.
- Authors
Pudlinski, Christopher
- Abstract
Addressing a lack of studies of actual social support strategies, this study describes the full breadth of actual supportive responses to callers of a peer support line for those with mental disabilities. Coding of over three hundred responses to caller reports of problems and/or solutions yielded three general purposes: summarizing or minimizing the problem, providing and/or seeking solutions, and supporting a caller's report. The variety of responses found within each general category indicates lack of a simple correspondence of message form to supportive function.
