- Title
Default Participation. Utopian and Dystopian Populism Challenging Research and Knowledge in Public.
- Authors
Timm, Elisabeth
- Abstract
The article discusses various approaches to decision-making in different areas such as science, research, urban planning, architecture, design, art, curation, and education. On one hand, "participation" is seen as democratic and enriching as it gives a voice to marginalized groups. On the other hand, it is criticized as a naive approach that devalues established professional knowledge and individualizes political and social problems as subjective sensitivities. The article emphasizes that "participation" can unleash various desires and that its implementation does not always have the intended democratic and transparent effects. It is also noted that "participation" can be fertile ground for populist rejection of expertise and for the confusion of scientific knowledge. The article calls for interdisciplinary exchange on experiences and strategies in dealing with "participation".
