- Abstract
Background: In the successful control of African Swine Fever (ASF) all the stakeholders, including game hunting associations, must cooperate effectively, and the regulatory procedures should continuously be optimized and adjusted to the changing epidemiological circumstances. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to survey the economic impact on game management of the spread of ASF and that of its control measures, and to make suggestions about prevention and reduction of financial losses of the game hunting associations. Materials and Methods: The authors personally interviewed the ASF expert group of the 52 Hungarian regional wildlife managers to survey their opinion about the impact of ASF on game management and their suggestions to improve the control of the disease and to decrease its costs. In the research the official database of game meat establishments in Hungary was also used. Results and Discussion: The experts stated that it is time to amend the official provisions regarding game meat because of introducing higher ASF risks categories in the entire territory of Hungary, as its consumption does not impose any threats to public health. Therefore, from both ethical and financial point of view the consumable and state-compensated game carcasses should not be destroyed as Category 1 risk material, rather be processed and marketed, if the official laboratory examination is ASF negative. Furthermore, it would significantly help implementing the control measures properly, if no stakeholder was forced to take part in the ASF control program despite its primary interest and basic principles, that would facilitate an effective collaboration among all the stakeholders.
