- Abstract
The first references to tele-dentistry were made in the 1990s when the US Army established the first dental project "Total Dental Acces" that allowed dental practitioners in a dental clinic from a base military to consult dentists specialists who were at a distance. After this, distance dental projects increased especially in the US, Europe, Australia and Brazil. Tele-dentistry is defined as a combination of telecommunication and dentistry, which involves the exchange of clinical information and images at distance, for dental consultation and treatment planning. Currently, using the technology available for these applications, dental professionals can display, record, sort, diagnose, and order remote care. Tele-dentistry can be available to anyone from an individual cabinet located in a rural or underprivileged area or in an urban clinic with state-of-the-art equipment and specialists in various areas of dental medicine. The authors outline a number of ways to use telemedicine in current practice. In conclusion, the benefits of tele-dentistry are felt both at the level of the patient and the provider of services, leading to superior quality care and a wide societal resonance.
