- Abstract
Introduction. Microscopic colitis (MC) is a chronic inflammatory pathology characterized by the presence of chronic diarrhea, colon mucosa normal to endoscopic study and specific histopathological findings. There are two subtypes: collagenous colitis (CC) and lymphocytic colitis (CL). It is associated with smoking, consumption of some medications and some autoimmune diseases. The cases of microscopic colitis registered in a third level hospital in western Mexico are presented. Methods. It was a retrospective study, carried out in the Coloproctology service of the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde during the period: January 2014 - February 2018. Epidemiological, clinical, endoscopic and histological findings were described. Descriptive statistics were performed that included measures of central tendency and dispersion. Results. Epidemiological, clinical, endoscopic and histological findings were described. Descriptive statistics were performed that included measures of central tendency and dispersion. Discussion. CM is an uncommon cause of chronic diarrhea. The diagnosis is based on the histopathological study of samples of the colon mucosa. The macroscopic findings in the endoscopic studies may be normal or have nonspecific data, so whenever there is a suspected diagnosis, a biopsy is suggested. This is the first description of patients with this diagnosis, treated at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde.
