- Abstract
Death, which is an inevitable end for every mortal, is also a cause of sorrow for those who stayed behind. While some people express this sadness by tears, some others externalise it by crying aloud as a rebellion. There are also some who lament the death wildly as a result of the tradition or an intend of making show. The importance of revealing the position of these actions and the judgement about them in Islamic worldview by relying on the narrations, is indisputable. It is not possible to say that crying with sorrow after the death of a person is not permissible since it is the result of the human nature [fitrah] and mercy. The Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] as well as the companions Omar (d. 23/644), Fatimah (d. 11/632), Ibn Mes'ud (d. 32/652-53) and Ibn Omar (d. 73/692) cried after the death of their loved ones. However it is understood from the narrations that it is not permissible to count the merits and virtues of the dead by crying loudly, hitting the face and head, tearing the clothes and calling the death. Furthermore such acts will cause the dead one to suffer torment if he or she has an effect on and contribution to these acts come out. This article aims to present the Prophetic narrations about the issues mentioned above, to comment on them and also to reveal the right and wrong crying and behaviour patterns.
