Honoring the Child with Dysbɘxia in a Montessori Classroom.
- Authors
Skotheim, Meghan Kane
- Abstract
The article discusses ways to deal with dyslexic students in a Montessori classroom. It states that dyslexia is manifested by a lack of proficiency in one or more of the processes of reading, spelling, or writing. As classroom teachers of pre-reading children, they can be at the forefront of identifying and helping the child with dyslexia. It argues that simple rhymes and alliteration are training the child to hear words as a collection of sounds with a focus on the initial or ending component. Teachers are suggested to play rhyming games in a small group by filling in the blanks with the right words. They can also ask the child to find his name in a group of names on name tags or on cubbies.
