- Abstract
The status and structure of Swayne's hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus swaynei)population were studied in the newly established Mazie National Park, Ethiopia, during the 2002-2003. The ground total counts were 277 and 242 during the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Females adults comprised 56.0%, while male adults were only 27.4% of the total population. Calves represented 16.6%. The population increased during the dry season (December-March), with the peak in December. The group structure of the animals varied with season. A relatively large herd size was observed during the wet season (largest herd 20 animals). The number of individuals fluctuated in each of the counting blocks. At present, human encroachment for agriculture and livestock is minimal but poaching and wild fire continue to affect the populations of Swayne's hartebeest in Mazie National Park.
