- Abstract
The purpose of Second Chance Schools (SCS) is to recover and re-enrol young people who have dropped out of school early. In Portugal, where the research was carried out, they show some specific characteristics compared to those in Spain and other European countries. The aim of this paper is to analyse the process followed by young people who access E2O in this country from their incorporation to the end of their stay, and to verify whether it is a successful experience. To this end, a qualitative methodology has been used, through semi-structured interviews with almost all the people responsible for the E2Os and through a discussion group in which all of them participated. The results indicate that these E2Os in Portugal aim above all at the educational return of young people to the formal education system and that they achieve this successfully, based on the creation of an affective bond with the students, a great capacity for adaptation and a methodology based on practice, as well as an important follow-up of the graduates.
