- Abstract
The Kansas City LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) National Education Service Center's (LNESC) Young Reader's Program combines social work principles and philosophies with a grounded educational curriculum in an after-school supplemental reading program for Hispanic/Latino, low-English-proficient, low-income, first- through third-grade students with below grade-level reading scores. An analysis of three year's of Sunshine Reading Assessment (SRA) scores of 291 students involved in the LNESC Young Reader's Program was conducted to assess the added benefit of the program over the school district reading program alone. Classroom teachers administered the SRA at the beginning and end of each school year as part of the school district's standard assessment procedures. Findings indicated a positive significant difference between participant group reading scores and comparison group reading scores.
