- Abstract
The importance of communal social support in women's mental well-being is well known; However, the role of spousal support for mothers with young children, particularly in societies which are changing from traditional norms to western role structures, has not been studied in depth. This paper assesses the effect of spousal support on the well-being and mental health of 150 women from rural, slum, and urban populations. The findings revealed that urban women perceived their husbands as more supportive, and slum women the least, with well-being having positively correlated with husband supportiveness in the slum and urban groups and less so in the rural group. Younger, more educated women, from higher income groups and with fewer children reported greater support. Issues related to the differences in perception of the nature and degree of spouse support and its effects on the various population groups are discussed.
