- Title
BUILDING, ENFORCING AND SUBVERTING MONOPOLY: FRANCE'S COMPAGNIE ROYALE D'AFRIQUE AND EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY MEDITERRANEAN TRADE.
- Authors
DENIS-DELACOU, CHRISTOPHER; GRENET, MATHIEU
- Abstract
The article chronicles cross-cultural trade and state rivalries in the Mediterranean Region based on the historical records of the Compagnie royale d'Afrique from 1741-1794. It is argued that the commercial competition resulted to several junctures in history including the redefinition of political economy and sovereignty, the significance given to the Maghreb of the Ottoman Empire, and the increasing international trade symbolized by commerce between Marseille and the Levant.
