The article focuses on the role of the cellular gas carbon monoxide (CO) in mitochondrial function, molecular structure and respiration. Carbon monoxide is a key component in various biological processes including enzymatic degradation of heme, regulation and regeneration of immune response, and protection of brain neurons. The etymology and physiology of CO are discussed.
