An essay is presented on the book "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan. A work of 17th-century Christian literature, it contains much symbolism involving the written word, such as books, legal documents, and formal invitations. An analysis of the interplay between Bunyan's allusions to Bible verses and his allusions to the social customs of his contemporaries is presented in this context.
