- Title
Beneath Lowry's Carnival: The Abject in Under the Volcano.
- Authors
McLeod, Andrew
- Abstract
The article discusses the abjection in the book "Under the Volcano" by English author Malcolm Lowry. It argues that while the novel is usually read via Mikhail Bakhtin's idea of the carnivalesque, it is more appropriately read through Julia Kristeva's abjection. It demonstrates how the novel forecloses a sense of renewal and resurrection in Bakhtinian carnivalesque, but reading the text through the abject lens properly appreciates its darker, horrifying and messy elements.
